Sketchbook Assignments

This is where all my sketchbook assignments are. For each week there were different prompts to follow. You can click on the image to see it enlarged.

Week 1

Draw at least six drawings from direct observation (real things only, not from photographs). Three of these six objects should be human-made or mechanical objects (but not electrical). The other three (minimum) should be of organic objects (natural objects; fruit, veggies, trees, plants, rocks, bones, etc., but again, not from photographs). I was mostly focusing on making sure I got the shading and realism right.

Week 2

Animate each of the six objects that you drew last week. Give each of the objects life. This does not necessarily mean to simply add legs and arms, but instead “distort” the original drawing in a way that it now looks like it could move about, or is alive. This may include arms and legs, etc. but that should not be the main aspect. While doing these, I was thinking about what kind of animation I'd want to put these in and drew that.

Week 3

Focus on one object only. A different object from any you have previously worked with. It must be something mechanical (not digital) that you can see how it works, the gears, the springs, the moving parts, etc. Draw these inner workings 6 different times. (examples; inside of a clock, bicycle gears, engine, motor, conveyor belt, etc.)  Focus on a detailed, realistic representation of how these parts interact with one another. I decided to draw in pen to try and make the drawings cleaner and clearer.

Week 4

Focus on one object only. A different object from any you have previously worked with. It must be something organic (not man-made). Objects with 3D form (examples; bones, vegetables, fruits, branches, roots, not flowers, etc.) Concentrate on shading. Make it look real. This drawing focused mostly on shading and getting the dimensionality of the banana down.

Week 5

Draw at least six drawings from direct observation (real things only) that you pass by on a walk around your block These should be things that you normally don’t notice yet you pass by them each day without seeing them. Take your sketchbook with you and draw these objects at their location, plan your time accordingly so that you can spend sufficient time to slowly and carefully examine every inch of their surface. Your goal is to accurately capture a realistic likeness of each object. I notice most things since I tend to look around a bit as I walk around, so I did things that I noticed but never really looked at.

Week 6

Draw at least six hands in different positions, from direct observation Your goal is to accurately capture the “life” of each hand. I wanted to do different positions for each hand. I also chose to do cell shading to make it quicker.

Week 7

Draw at least six eyes in different positions, from direct observation Your goal is to accurately capture the “life” of each eye. I wanted to try to make the lines in the iris look realistic and have a gradual change in shading.

Week 8

Draw at least six noses in different positions, from direct observation Your goal is to accurately capture the “life” of each nose. I've never drawn noses before, so I just wanted to make the noses make sense.
