What is Design
While art is broad and includes many things, design is more of the thought behind the artwork. The idea that was brought to light. The decisions made that lead to the final result. The thought behind what color to use, what graphics would work best and where, how things should be displayed. Design is the choice between making something simple or super detailed. Whether to go for something cute or dark. Whether to make something realistic or like a cartoon. How the artwork looks once finished.

It does not pertain to every type of art, though. While dance and music are considered an art, you do not design those. You may choreograph a dance and produce music, but you do not design a dance or design music. Design is what is put on paper or what is made in 2D originally. It may be made digitally or traditionally, but it starts in 2D. For example, Interior design starts with an idea being put on paper before it is brought to life. Fashion and architecture also starts as a sketch on paper before it is physically made.

Therefore, design may be a part of art, but it isn’t as broad. It has to deal more with the idea that prompted the artwork and what decisions were made to create it. It is also more for artworks that started in 2D instead of other forms, such as writing.
