What is Craft

Craft may not be as broad as art, but it is more broad than design. It doesn’t always have to do with art, but is often associated with it due to the idea of arts and crafts. It doesn’t always involve design, either. While Art is the broad umbrella for the creations that people make and design is the choices that lead to those creations, craft is more of the actual skill that made the creation possible.

It is what someone is passionate about that they have put time and effort into improving. It is what someone is willing to do to make something regardless if they’re good at it or not. How they make their design come to life. If it’s not their career/job, it’s usually a hobby for them. It’s something that they enjoy. Someone may specialize in mechanics or baking, making it their craft even though it’s not related to art. When it does have to do with art and design, it’s the type of medium that someone specializes in, whether that’s painting, drawing, or something else.

The many different crafts that someone may have is what helped make various professions, too. It also helps keep the world working since we need people to do certain jobs that others may not be fit for. For example, we need people who can build things so that we have shelter and tools to use. However, not everyone may be able to come up with an architectural plan that is possible or efficient. Someone may be able to come up with a design, but they may not be able to make it come to life. This doesn’t mean that art and design aren’t important, though. Craft may be the skill that someone may develop, but design comes before and art is the ultimate result.
